It's All About Arts

*********************************************
Give us a brief bio of yourself.
*********************************************
E.G.: I am originally from Walpole, Ma. I graduated from Pondville School of Nursing in Norfolk, Ma in 1970 and have continued to work in the health field since. Presently, I am working part time as a nurse and part time to full time as a wire jewelry artist.

I have been artistically inclined for many years, and was involved in stained glass since 1981 as a hobby. I began learning basic wire wrapping techniques in 1995 while attending a glasscrafters workshop. The class was fun, informative, and I was amazed at how wire wrapping could transform a piece of fused glass into a beautiful piece of unique jewelry. It eliminated the use of glue or drilling a hole threw the glass to attach a bail. I have not been a day without wire since. I have continued my learning skills in wire sculpture from educational wire sculpting videos, jewelry design books and attending workshops offered by other wire artists, and lots of patience and practice.

I have been a featured artist in Wire Artist Jeweller Magazine and The Wireworker newsletter. My jewelry designs can be seen and purchased at local craft shows, gift shops, home shows and on the Internet at www.wire-sculpted-jewelry.com. My jewelry is also featured on Juried Online Arts Festival, Your Online Gallery, and Electronic Cottage Online Gallery.

What is your medium?

E.G.: 14KGF & Sterling Silver Wire. I enjoy designing and creating a variety of jewelry using wire and beads, cameos, shells, semiprecious stones and gems. My favorite is Glass...Dichroic glass, Venetian glass, glass beads and cabochons. I just love the visual effects that glass can portray depending on the amount of rays of light hitting it. Each creation is unique and beautiful. Wire jewelry is unlike any other jewelry crafting, as there is no soldering involved. Each intricate piece is made by using my hands and hand tools (pliers, wire cutters, & hammer) and twisting, bending, and wrapping different gauge wires.

How long have you been doing your art?
*********************************************
E. G.:I began learning wire craft jewelry making in 1995 as a hobby. Not long after selling my jewelry to my friends and co-workers, I did my first craft show. I did well and sold most of my jewelry pieces by noon. That is when I realized that there was a public interest in wire jewelry and my wire jewelry.

*********************************************
Do you make a living at your art and what advice would you give someone else who would like to do the same?
*********************************************
E.G.: At present I have a steady income from my part time nursing career but I also do fairly well with my Wire Jewelry Craft. I see myself in the near future working at only my jewelry designing as there is less and less time to continue both.

Wire jewelry has become popular and there is always room for more artists to learn this craft. As with any type of art, each artist has his or her own style and uniqueness. Learning wire jewelry making is not real difficult but does require patience, persistence and a lot of wasted wire.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
*********************************************
E.G.: Because of the war and our world situation today, I think all artists and business are finding it much more challenging selling and marketing there products.

*********************************************
What art-related organizations do you belong to?
*********************************************
E.G.: NCA – National Craft Association. It is an informative and resouce center for artist and crafters.
