It's All
About Arts
*********************************************
Give us a brief bio of yourself.
*********************************************
S. M.: I grew up in the Chicago area, and am largely a
self-taught painter, though I've taken life drawing and other studio art classes on
and off all my life. I'm also a psychotherapist, which was my career for 25 years,
including while raising my daughter here in Wayland. In 1995 I decided to pursue my art in
a serious manner, and I've been painting full-time as a profession for the last 8 years.
I'm a working member of Saxonville Studios in Framingham, a studio community of 15 diverse
professional artists.
*******************************************
What is your medium?
*********************************************
S. M.: I work primarily in acrylic and tempera paint,
collage, and pen and ink drawing. Occasionally I paint with watercolors.
*********************************************
How long have you been doing your art?
*********************************************
S. M.: I've been making art all of my life (54 years).
*********************************************
Do you make a living at your art and what advice would you give someone else who would
like to do the same?
*********************************************
S. M.: No, I don't as yet make a living. Last year I sold
enough art to just about break even on expenses, including studio rent. This year my
intention is to at least double that, and I may also teach a class. My wonderful husband
is kind enough to make a living wage. At this point, I have a large body of work, and my
art is in collections locally and internationally. I've won awards, and I try to exhibit
as much as possible. My advice: please do find a way to do your art if that's your
calling! The world needs more art.
*********************************************
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
*********************************************
S. M.: Financial!
*********************************************
What art-related organizations do you belong to?
*********************************************
S. M.: I'm a member of Saxonville Studios, and The Center
for Arts in Natick. |
